This project is a collection of portraits and short stories of individuals who witnessed the Dec 2013 riot at Singapore’s Little India, one of the country’s worst outbreak of violence in four decades.
Based on media reports, the violence broke out after 33-year-old Indian worker Sakthivel Kumaravelu died in a bus accident at the junction of Race Course Road and Hampshire Road.
Hundreds of South Asian workers went on a rampage that left 39 persons, including police officers, injured. An ambulance and two patrol cars were also set on fire.
These stories and portraits provide alternative narratives to an important chapter in Singapore’s history.
